How the Telstra Connected Seniors program worked for Eddie's bridge club.
(Fictional case study)

72 year old retired accountant, Eddie Driver, is an avid member of the Mature Masters Bridge Club.

He'd recently taken on the job of showing new members the basics of the game and encouraging them to get involved in club competitions. As an experienced computer user from his years as an accountant, Eddie believed that communicating with new members would be easier via email and mobile phone messaging.

First steps

When Eddie heard about Telstra Connected Seniors® he saw a great opportunity to share a little of what he knew to make things easier for himself and club members.

But was there a need at his club for technology education? Eddie asked around to find out how many members had mobile phones and computers, and what they knew about using them.

He found that while many had mobiles, few knew how to use them for SMS messaging. And while only a handful had computers, they would be happy to pass emailed messages to other club members if they knew how. With a little training, Eddie could use these tools to streamline member communication.

Time to apply

Having decided that Telstra Connected Seniors® would work well for the club, Eddie applied online. He proposed a series of training sessions for all new club members aged over 60. Participants would be taught how to master mobile phone messaging and emailing in order to find out about tournaments and competitions.

Application approved!

The good news was soon received - Eddie's application was successful. The grant agreement was signed, with the club agreeing to run the proposed training courses and report back on the outcomes.

Getting ready

Eddie's local Telstra Connected Seniors® representative set up an appointment at his local Telstra shop. Eddie was shown the Telstra EasyTouch® Discovery handsets that are demonstrated in the training materials provided and purchased them using grant money.

In additional to the comprehensive training kit Eddie had received in the mail, he found further material on the Telstra Connected Seniors® website. Putting it all together, he was easily able to organise a great series of training workshops tailored for his club. for his club.

Success

After only a few sessions, the results were clear. Eddie had successfully shown some of his club members the basics of mobile and email messaging, and more were signing up for his course all the time.

For the members, being aware of what was on encouraged them to participate and made them feel welcome.

For Eddie, it meant less time organising bridge games and more time competing in them.
