How to stay safe online

The online world is great for educational, social and entertainment purposes. And with almost 17 million people online in Australia, the internet is now an integral part of our day-to-day lives. But there can be risks in the virtual world.

When it comes to using the internet people at any age need to know how to stay safe online at all times.

Here are 7 tips to remember:

  • Keep the family computer in an open area where it can be monitored.
  • Keep private information private - don't give out personal details including dates of birth without
carefully considering if it is really necessary.
  • Know what to do and where to go if you encounter online bullying.
  • Keep online friendships online - never go to meetings without telling anyone, or arrange to meet in isolated
places. People in the real world are not always what they seem to be in the virtual one.
  • Use a mobile PIN number and treat a mobile as you would the internet or your bank account
    - online is online.
  • Reinforce positive behaviour and values in the online world.
  • Know it's ok to get help; tell someone you know or trust - a friend or family member - or the police.
